BIKING FOR CHILDREN

They roll in from everywhere, engines revving and faces smiling. Hundreds of Middle Georgia Bikers convene at events they call “Runs” in order to benefit someone in need.

At monthly outreach meetings, the bikers consider their next project. Perhaps it is to help pay medical bills for an ill child, or a fundraiser for CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates for children), or a Toy Run for Kid’s Yule Love.

Some may be rough hewn, clad in tattered jeans and black leather vests, but these angels base their mission from the book of Matthew - Chapter 25, “For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me.”

Middle Georgia Bikers welcomes anyone to their meetings. For more information call Executive Director Don Belflower at 478-875-2096.

“It was our best yet!” said Don Belflower of last weekend’s 5th Annual Middle Georgia Biker’s Benefit Run.

Belflower, the Executive Director of the bikers’ association estimates about 500 bikers attended the event which started at Dublin’s HGTC Porter Center and followed a route through Laurens County.

“We started out with a lot of bikers, and it looked like we picked up a whole pile more along the way,” Belflower said.

The biker’s run will benefit CASA - Court Appointed Special Advocates which utilizes community volunteers to speak for the best interests of abused and neglected children in court.

Belflower said the total raised for CASA will be tallied at the organization’s meeting next week.

John Chester, of Roddy (near Cochran) won the raffle for the 2002 Honda VTX 1800 motorcycle. Belflower said the raffle generated both interest and funds by those who attended the event.

Belflower said the people of Dublin and Laurens County will have the first opportunity to see a documentary filmed during the Bike Run. The documentary, filmed by Gil Gillis Video Productions, will premiere locally before copies go on sale.

The Middle Georgia Biker’s next event will be in Garfield, Ga on August 16th to benefit New Beginnings, a privately owned drug and alcohol recovery program.

“Each month at (the Middle Georgia Bikers’) monthly outreach meeting, we consider someone in need,” said Belflower. “We saw they have a great need and we’re gonna give them some help. Our whole entire group is going to ride and support them at this first annual event.”

Registration forms for the Garfield event are available online at www.middlegeorgiabikers.com.

“We want to say again ‘THANKS’ to all the sponsors that gave door prizes and monetary contributions to make this event possible.”

The “Middle Georgia Bikers” would like to say a big THANK YOU for making the 3rd Annual Benefit Run on Saturday, July 29, 2006 a great success. We had approximately 340 bikers, around 290 motorcycles and this event generated $12,000 approximately. The two charities was “Cedar Grove Volunteer Fire Department” and “Poplar Springs North Baptist Church Youth Group.” Middle Georgia Bikers was also able to divide $1,500 between 5 more charities with what came in through registration. We want to recognize our top sponsor that gave in door prizes which was Betty’s Wholesale. Our top monetary sponsor for this event was Jimmy Rogers with Jimmy Rogers Construction.

We want to say again ‘THANKS’ to all the sponsors that gave door prizes and monetary contributions to make this event possible.

We especially would like to say THANK YOU to: Dublin Courier-Herald, TV-35, The Bargain Hunter and the local radio stations for getting out the news about the event and sharing whom our sponsors were. And again we THANK Ken Deloach of the ‘Georgia State Patrol along with local law enforcement for making this a safe event.

We ask that you visit our web site at www.middlegeorgiabikers.com to view more about the event and comment and share with us others whom you know that we can reach out to for events in the future or call 478-875-2096.
